Electricity and CO2 savings in sheet-fed offset printing through optimisation of material selection and process parameters

Short name: Electricity and CO2 savings in sheet-fed offset

Fogra no. 35.014
Project leader: J. Gemeinhardt
Funding: BMWE (IGF) via DLR

Timescale: 01.02.2025 - 31.01.2027

Objective and relevance

The aim of the research project is to investigate the electricity savings that can be achieved through targeted material selection and press settings.

Possible parameters include inks, fountain solutions, printing blankets, printing plates, the activation or deactivation of bridge and differential rollers, and the cooling of inking units and fountain solution.

Solution steps

A representative selection of materials is produced and characterised in the laboratory. Fogra staff will carry out systematic printing tests on a sheet-fed offset press, measuring the corresponding energy consumption. Regression analysis and machine learning methods are used to determine the correlations with the material parameters. The results obtained will then be verified on a press from each of the three German press manufacturers.

Targeted results

The aim is to provide specific information on the material properties and press settings that need to be selected to minimise energy consumption. In addition to reducing production costs and CO2 emissions, this will help printers to meet new legal requirements.

Based on the derived correlations, material manufacturers will be able to further optimise their products and advise their customers accordingly.
