On the one hand, manufacturers can include the characteristic values in the specifications of their printing presses. On the other hand, print shops can compare their requirements for the print quality to be achieved with the available printing machines and select a suitable system for purchase.

In addition, they enable an objective check of the quality characteristics assured by the manufacturer, for example in the form of a technical acceptance.

What you need to do

The examination concept has a modular structure. Let us know which variant you would like to take:

The basic module is an integral part of the service. Optionally, the gradation and geometry modules can be added.

In addition, either a complete package, consisting of on-site monitoring of the test prints and their evaluation, or exclusively an evaluation of submitted print samples can be claimed. The complete package is recommended in case of a contractually agreed acceptance by a neutral institution. The sole evaluation, on the other hand, is suitable for press manufacturers who only want to record the quality parameters of their printing machines.

Our procedure

Regardless of whether we are on site when the test prints are carried out, the metrological evaluations take place in our laboratories.

In the basic module, colour accuracy, reproduction of spot colours, colour variations over format and print run, streakiness, detail reproduction, edge quality and homogeneity of the printout are determined.

The gradation module comprises the tonal resolution and the reproducible tonal range. The geometry module, on the other hand, determines the image register, the positioning accuracy (simplex and duplex) and the dimensional accuracy of the colour separations.

All tests and quality parameters in detail

The guidliness for digital printing do not contain any tolerances, but only a description of the test procedures including test forms, characteristic values and their evaluation. This is due to the fact that the range of quality characteristics to be found on the market is just as wide as the diverse requirements for different print products.

For users, the individual definition of suitable quality attributes often proves difficult. To support them, the guidline contains value ranges for each parameter that describe the spectrum of electrophotographic printing systems currently on the market. The results of a typical offset print are shown there as reference points. Fogra also has sample books for selected parameters, which can be viewed on request.
