FOGRA59 in practice

The Canon ProStream 1800 is the first digital printing system that Fogra certified with the FOGRA59 exchange colour space according to ProcessStandard Digital. Fogra elaborated the basic concept for FOGRA59 back in 2015 with the research project "Consolidating Standardisation". The aim of the project was to develop an exchange colour space (FOGRA53) with a large colour gamut, which can be proofed and corresponds to the typical CMYK printing processes in terms of form and tone value characteristics.
Fogra also had digital printing applications with extended colour gamut in mind. In order to make the best possible use of the large colour space, RGB data had to be directly converted to the printer’s colour space – a method that does not offer a high degree of colour predictability or the possibility of using a proof for colour communication. With FOGRA53, the colour space of the press can be used optimally and with a predictable result.
With FOGRA59 – the new, improved variant of FOGRA53 with adjusted grey balance – Fogra has succeeded in taking another important step towards the utilization of the exchange colour space in digital printing. FOGRA59 contains similar amounts of cyan, magenta and yellow known from established printing processes and leads to an easier handling in printing.
